What is the #1 Sign of a Geek?

Is it their inability to stay away from computers?

Social Skills (or lack thereof)?

Caffiene? (Sugared or otherwise)?

How does one know, when a geek walks into the room? (Does anyone care?)

What does a good geek read? Listen too?

There are many varieties of "geek", and not all are visible. I think that the primary reqirement is the desire/urge to learn and explore, and a relentless curiosity that can be turned inward or outward.

Some geeks have social skills, some geeks are happy to take breaks from computers--and some don't even like computers. Caffeine is (shudder) optional..

A geek knows a geek when a geek sees a geek because there's frequently one of two looks in the eyes of a geek. Either inroverted thought where nothing in the room matters, or extroverted searching- "What's here. How can I use it?" Frequently geeks are scatterbrained about appearance, lending additional clues- socks that don't match (they're both white. Who will notice?) clothes that don't fit quite right (who has time to find pants of the perfect length? An inch or two off is fine.) But that doesn't always apply, either.

There's no single sure sign of a geek, but there are a lot of signs that, when seen, can pinpoint someone immediately. Unfortunately this variety of signs also leads to finger-pointing. "You're not a geek!" and "You're not enough of a geek!" and so on by the so-called elite. Bah.

I'm constantly looking for other geeks, mainly passively. I might wear an Anime shirt or something, or have some geek tech visible. At my new job I plastered my cube with webcomics. Some people are blunt about it others are passive. I try to dress passively about being a geek, but sometimes I'm blunt about it.

You forgot the covert gek. The one that dresses in a completely together manner and seems jsut like anyone else, until they open their mouth on their geek subject.

      I am a covert geek :o)

Should a good geek be able to mingle with normal people and not be noticed? Can one pretend to have good social skills (virtual social skills) in order to fool most of the people all of the time?

Social skills, or the lack thereof are not a attribute of a geek, rather, they are a attribute of a slightly different animal often confused with geeks. I'm refering to the common nerd. Nerds are usually very easy to spot due to there total and complete lack of social skills, and the inability to function among anyone but other nerds. I guess you could say a nerd is essentialy a geek with no social skills.

Geeks can have a lack of social skills as well. I believe that the nerd is a geek without the knowledge. They have some of the 'negative' attributes associated with geekitude, ie: poor dressing skills, poor people skills, etc. but without the saving grace of knowledge. Naturally, not all geeks have these downsides. =]

I'm going to almost agree with Sara here.

I think a nerd is someone who can take a subject (often esoteric, e.g. chemical composition of insulation windings for large transformers) and dive deep into it, often to the exclusion of other things, like social graces, football, or mixed drinks. (any of which can also be a topic to nerditate on). Most nerds I know do this on many subjects.

Geek, in my parlance, is someone who can do this and has demonstrated mastery in on or more of these chosen subjects.

Both of the above defns are orthogonal to the social skills dimension.

I would use the word dork for Saraq's description of the negative aspects without the knowledge. (or intensity of purpose in obtaining knowledge, which to me is the core or nerdosity).

I had a conversation at a bus stop that underscored, for me, the difference between a geek and a nerd. A teenager (I'm 33) saw me reading a Star Wars novel and struck up a conversation about Star Wars. But while I wanted to talk about the themes and ideas of Star Wars, he began rattling off facts like the crew capacity of a Star Destroyer.

That was it, right there. Nerds are all about the technical stuff. Geeks look deeper, appreciating the intrinsic coolness of their geek obsessions.

But hey, everybody's thing is cool with me.

              that is the question

I think Richmond hit the nail on the head.

I personally wear my geekness on my sleeve, it's practically written on my forhead with a sharpie. I think nerds are the people who are so into thier hobbie (computers, star wars, magic:tg cards, whatever) that it makes them hard to be around, while a geek can unplug and go be sociable with some "normal" people.

                  >while a geek can unplug and go be sociable with some "normal" >people.

Or try to, at least :)

I think having a critical mind is a big part of it as well. When arguing about the relative merits of, say, a movie, we can generally pinpoint why it worked or didn't work, rather than just "wasn't it cool when spidey fought the green goblin?" Though we also recognize and appreciate that coolness.

Ok everyone here it is the difference between a geek and a nerd from the www.whatis.com website.

                    A Geek:
Is a person who is inordinately dedicated to and involved with technology to the point of sometimes not appearing to be normal.

                    A Nerd:
Is a technically bright but socially inept person. The classic image of the nerd has been the wild-haired genius kid with thick-lensed glasses surrounded by test tubes and computers. Microsoft's Bill Gates is sometimes considered the walking embodiment of the older, successful nerd

And in my defense I'm a Geek so there you have it fellow Geeks and geeketts

Personally, one of the number one geeky signs I have noticed is the presence of reading materials, and a propensity for reading even when *gasp* not necessary.

Especially since leaving university, when you notice someone who has to carry a book around with them everywhere, whether or not (or maybe especially when not) they have the time to peruse their book of choice.

At least it isn't as bad for me as when in high school, when once, asked if I was in hockey due to the hockey I carried everywhere with me, had to reply that it wasn't the case.

I just was in the habit of carrying a hockey bag full of books with me everywhere I went.

I had been limiting it to just 3 or 4 books 'til I got a new car after my divorce, but it's now like a literary archaeological dig in my car.

I can somewhat relate to that Math Guy, because I myself have to admit with me, whenever I go somewhere, like to my kids doctors appointments, or somewhere where I know I will have time to read, I always bring with me 1 or 2 computer magazines to keep my mind occupied, I'm a big computer junkie myself, maybe a habit I got from my Dad who was into computers as well and did the same thing. Like they saym once a geek, always a geek.

Bullseye, Math Guy! Even if I'm just going a few blocks on the bus, I gotta have a book or a magazine. If I'm out somewhere and I stop for lunch, I have to stop and get a magazine first. I took a lot of guff in high school for how much I read, especially if the person realized I was reading a book for the second or third time--then they'd get downright hostile!

Geekish behavior isn't limited to just computers. Could be anything one is passionate or is highly interested in learning anything about. The knowledge or skill gained from those expereiences is something they know or can perform well.

I'd like to think I have some social skills. :)

I like caffeine, but I don't think that's a requirement for "geekhood" (not to say there aren't coffee geeks).

If a geek walks into a room, and no one notices ...

Geeks read what they will and listen to what they will as well. I think the difference between a person who just enjoys reading or listening to music is that the geek might tell you what authors influenced the writer of the book you're reading, or what musicians influenced the artist you might be listening to. In quite a bit of detail. And the geek might even have some kind of trivia to go along with those facts for fun. :D

You can't miss them! Its the clothes and just listen for a moment, and you can pick one out of a crowd in a room, and then there is the hair, and if they wear glasses, you know thier going be out dated! You can't miss that. Then just throw out a gaming Q, and you have them... like " What does it mean you add 2 the throwing skill in dex? " You will instantly get asked about what system, and character etc.. or you can ask if the warp theory being researched by Stephen Hawkins has been proven yet.. that gets them started to.. :)
SO! You don't need a book to pick them out..:)

      Goes like this, darlin...

Party or social situation is occuring. A few geeks start in talking in depth about their pet topic (hacking, hardware, photography, gaiming, text editors, whatever).

      Do you
      a) go get a drink
      b) jump in and give your opinion
      c) feel a breeze, hear bats
      d) all of the above
      e) none of the above
      f) does it work with WINE?

Everything works with wine dear. It just depends on how loose you want to be in the subject matter at hand. Jumping into the conversation can intimadate an unsuspecting geek. *chuckle*.. the poor guy geek might trip on his tounge as he is explaining his latest gaming tech..or what ever subject it might be..,but..none the less..and I don't hear bats.. music maybe..lol..depends on the rhythm of the situation.

Jump into the conversation, but do not intimidate everyone. :)

Overall, I think geeks show, or demonstrate, passion for things they dig. They could be socially "aware' and capable. They don't have to consume mass quantities of caffiene (I don't at all) and they might be able to talk to men/women. I also don't think it is just about computers anymore...there are lots of things to geek over. I like a variety myself.

Nerds, on the other hand, don't consider it a passion, but more of a way of life. They don't know anything different because that is their reality. They are stuck in their own existence, because that is all they can process.

Sometimes, maybe more often nowadays, there is a Geek/Nerd hybrid. The one who acknowledges the passion and the existence outside of their box, but it unable to do anything about it.

My name is MattOrrin, and I'm a geek.
