Are You A GEEK?

So, you ever wonder what makes a geek a geek, well I can tell you from personal experience some of the required "ingredients", if you follow these steps you either are a geek or will be before too long:

1) Consume large quantities of sugared caffiene (Mountain Dew, Espresso, Water Joe, Red Bull, etc.)

2) Hate mornings, love to work in a comfort zone that usually ends about 2-3AM (or later for you young pups).

3) Have more than one computer in your house, or the one computer you have in your house has many "customized" options and features that you installed yourself.

4) NOT run any Microsoft Product as your primary OS (yes, you can have a Windows computer, I have several, but Linux and Solaris and FreeBSD are more predominate than Windows in my house).

5) Do you go to movies and wonder what kind of computer generated the special effects (you get more points if you KNOW what computer generated the special effects by some characteristic of the special effects).

More signs coming later.. I'm busy g33king and have to get back to that now..

I am a geek, but I believe there are many different kinds of geeks (I myself am a gaming geek :D) so I don't quite fall into all those catagories. :/

Eww. sugar. That just plain interferes with the integrity of the caffeine. Gimme coffee, black any day (or better yet, espresso). I could just skip to popping a pill, but I like the routine. =]

i've just bought a mug which has in integrated cafetiere. it's made from some kind of space age insulating plastic that keeps my coffee warm even when i'm smoking outside in the freezing british autumn, and it looks cool (IMHO). anyway.

i don't think geeks are defined by the OS they run. many geeks aren't even defined by a liking for technology. they are just all different implementations of the base geek type. (my mother, for instance, is an "old testament languages geek".)

perhaps we could use this thread to come up with some attributes which apply to all (or almost all) geeks? my contribution is: "a tendancy to use things for something cooler and probably more dangerous than their intended purpose"

I was thinking about that in fact.. after I gave it some thought I realized that there can be gardening geeks, teaching geeks, pretty much anything can be taken to an extreme such as required by the standard.

I think the only common thread is an obsession with the pursuit of knowledge in areas that one is passionate about. Geeks research, innovate, and inquire.

I'm a computer geek, a cooking geek, a movie geek, a book geek, psychology geek, and a health geek.

Another qualification for computer geek could be, "turned on by non-GUI interfaces and hardware".

I myself am a networking geek. The PC is a portal into the network. Ofcourse I have OS preferences but its the routing that gets me all geeked out.

Wireless stuff is exciting too though.

Gave up caffeinated coffee and have a kid so I can't keep the hours I used to. I think my friends would still call me a geek.

I love GUI interface... it lets me have 6 or 7 terminals open at the same time. Hardware I don't much care for as long as its running good and not slowing me down. As for Wireless, I wish I could afford it, but for now my good old cat5 tripwires will have to do.

And before someone says it, yes I know about virtual terminals and programs like screen, but I like to be able to look at all my terminals at a glance. I'm usually programming in 2 or 3, and have various man pages open in the others.

Being able to cut and paste between terminal sessions is a good thing, too.

I have in my basement two AT&T "Layers" terminals. Pretty neat gadgets...they're sort of like precursors to X terminals---they multiplex up to six terminal windows over a serial connection off a unix box that's running special layers software. It's actually surprisingly responsive, you would never realize that you're "splitting your signal" six ways.

neat toys. I ought to get them set up again. yes.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Oh, sure...the only time a woman wants pictures of my equipment, and it's of COMPUTER equipment. Typical.

Here's the 5620, which weighs about 5620 lbs:
                      www.bell-labs.com/user/dwd/5620.jpg

and here's the successor, the 630, which is the direct ancestor to the GNOT:
                      www.bell-labs.com/user/dwd/630.jpg

it's funny that in these pictures, people were still so unfamiliar with the mouse that they twisted them around to show "yes! it even has BUTTONS!"

And the rosebud vase in the 630 picture does not actually come with the terminal. Which is a shame.

The FAQ for these terminals is here:
                      www.bell-labs.com/user/dwd/5620faq.html

These are VERY cool gadgets for command-line-o-philes. If you ever run across one, snatch it up.

Do these run infocom games?!?! What decade are these from?

Old hardware definitely has its own sex appeal.
                        • Re: Are You A GEEK?

                          Mon, November 10, 2003 - 8:10 PM
they would display infocom games, if you had a host computer to actually run them and use a serial console as a UI. I don't remember if infocom had any games that ran on machines that used a serial console specificly. Were there CP/M versions of infocom games?

Otherwise, I seem to recall that there is an interpreter for ZIL (Zork Interactive Language) available on the internet, that you could compile on a unix host and...there ya go.

Directly running one of those games using the computer inside the terminal would be a greater challange. I know that the machines can be updated to 256K, so if the compiler in the 5620 dev kit is good enough, that might be enough space to contain the ZIL binary as well as a disk image of the game data. HMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmm...

No, mike, you really don't have time to do this. resist.

                          Oh, and they're from 1984.

one tree of descendents eventually became X terminals, and another tree became the GNOT.

:) I love GUI for that, as well. I spend most of my time in a GUI in a CLI or 20. GUI's do make things more convenient, but what can you get more done with-- a GUI without a CLI, or a CLI without a GUI? Yeah, I know. Not really a choice we have to make. Just saying that the GUI doesn't get me going, the CLI does.

Ok, well the cat5 thing is cool in the sense that I like hardware. Period. BUT

I currently work for a wireless carrier and am part of the product development team. I have to say I really dig getting all the new toys to play with and having internet access anytime, anywhere (ok coverage limitations apply). It makes me feel like I am living in a Gibson novel. This ofcourse has its ups and downs. Being able to IM from the bathroom of a con or on the train definitely has major geek points.

Played around at all with cantennas (waveguides or otherwise)? If I could afford the equipment I'd be working on setting up a network in my neighborhood (or possibly a larger area if I could manage it).

I started with Dos 3.22 and I loved it. When windows came out I was like "blah, this is crap, this is going to cut down on performance" Even today when I want to open Internet explorer or some app I go to Widnows Key-R and type in the command. I love *nix, but i'm too lazzy to go *nix nuts and switch. I love Mac OS X because it has BSD underneath and I can treat it like a real computer.

              LONG LIVE COMMAND LINE!!!

Now, Bill Joy is a geek. I'm geekin' with Bill. OSX has the most beautiful GUI in the world. And as they say down south: "God don't like ugly."

    www.wired.com/wired/archi...ljoy_pr.html

Though I do still prefer CLI ftp to all the GUI front-ends to ftp. And Fink. Fink is good.

The most beautiful GUI I've ever seen is Enlightenment, and it also just so happens to be the most useable GUI I've ever seen as well. OSX looks good in some ways, but I love the minimalist interface on Enlightenment.

I am a geek who HATES all OSs. Not a good one yet.
I am also the type of geek that will see a computer in a movie and say "Hey, that's a ..." and be able to tell you the history of the machine

I scoff at the notion that one cannot be a geek and be primarily a Windows guy.
